CACHE DIGITAL DOGS ON-LINE VIRTUAL LEARNING

For the 2020-2021 school year, Cache Public Schools will offer a full-time virtual option for schooling as a way to help our families who have anxiety about returning to school. 

The virtual option for schooling will be for core subjects (reading/English, math, social studies, & science) and state requirements (PE in elementary and graduation requirements in HS). For most students that will be 6 subjects, instead of the 7 offered in the traditional building.

The delivery of education subjects for grades 6-12 will be through a computerized delivery method using the web-based curriculum, Edmentum. The 6-12 students should be able to work through the program independently; however, a parent will need to monitor educational progress at home. A  teacher will be assigned as a contact to help the student.

Elementary parents, grades PreK – 5th grade, should expect to facilitate their student’s learning with the help of a teacher in Cache Primary and/or Intermediate. While we planned to use a computer program to assist with virtual learning, a change was required when vendors could not meet our needs by the start of school. We have great teachers and programs, and they will help you stay paced with what is occuring in the traditional building.  

Students are required to attend school for standardized state testing if they choose virtual learning in the spring. A small group testing session may be administered at parent request. 

If students wish to participate in competitive athletics, fine arts, or other activities governed by the OSSAA, they are required to attend school for one hour per day. This hour can be the athletics or activity hour. Students are also required to remain eligible by maintaining acceptable progress and a passing grade in every subject. 

The parent & student must commit to a full semester if this option is selected. This due to the program teaching subjects in a differing order from the traditional classroom. It is also due to the pacing of subjects. Some students will be able to work quickly through the course materials, others more slowly. Regardless, everyone will be in a different place throughout the semester. This makes placing a student back in the traditional classroom difficult. The student will have a ten-day trial period and after that time when discontinuing the virtual option. 

Students may receive a device based on need. The student will be responsible for returning the device in working condition, or they will be responsible for damage, similar to a textbook. We will use Chromebooks for devices.

This option must be deemed educationally appropriate. If a student severely struggles in processing written material, for example, reading passages and learning independent of the classroom may not be appropriate. 

Students who currently have an independent education plan (IEP) will be required to meet with their IEP team to determine eligibility and services while performing virtual learning.

If a family desires this option, please fill out a form for each student by August 5th. The enrollment form will close on August 5th. Students and families will be contacted for an orientation shortly after that date.
